Technology We Use

This page credits the software we use, explains how we use these programs to create our Webpages and our Photo Galleries. Also included is additional software recommendations we rave about such as Firefox Internet Browser and Thunderbird Email System (see end of this page below).

Please see our Acknowledgements page under the Main Menu on the left for our “big thank yous” to the folks who helped us out, namely USCA librarian Paul Lewis and the developers of our wonderful software!

Also, check out our Photo Gallery album: Our Software and How We Got Started. It tells the story of how ZMMQuality.org came to be. It also provides tutorials and “screen captures” on the Gallery editing process, creating captions, using ACDsee and HTML-Kit and saving “screen captures.”

Our Software

php Gallery Software

My ZMM Quality.org Photo Gallery is powered by "php Gallery Software". They have created such a wonderful way to view photo albums over the Internet! You can learn more at this site. Especially you will want to click on “Sample Galleries” in the menu at upper left at http://gallery.menalto.com/ To use this software you will have to download it into your own computer and set your computer to be an internet server. All this takes advanced knowledge. Alternatively you can pay a monthly fee to an Internet Web Hosting Company to so this for you. See "Certified Web Host Companies" at the bottom of page at http://gallery.menalto.com/ .

Their "php Gallery Web Photo Album SLIDE-SHOW" is outstanding!! To try it, follow the instructions on "Gallery Slideshow Info" in my Main Menu at Left. This webpage will explain how to use the Gallery Photograph Slide Show. Links to examples are given.

Gallery Remote

ZMM Quality Gallery Pages have my photos transferred from my computer to the computer of to my remote Internet Web Hosting Company, by a wonderful and powerful FTP software called Gallery Remote which is downloaded and installed in my computer. Many, many "thank you's” to the Gallery Development team for another super fine product! http://gallery.menalto.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=phpWiki&file=index&pagename=Gallery%20Remote

PmWiki

I have recently changed my text webpages to pmWiki, because, (after learning a few tricks) it is marvelously easy to use. There are a number of "Cookbook Recipie" add-ons that make pmWiki even better! For example there is the needed statistical data collection and reporting ability called "TotalCounter" (This is often called the site referrers statistical package"). To view it click here.
To have your own website with pmWiki Software, you could choose a Internet Host Companies which will provide the internet server with pmWiki for a monthly fee. Look at pmWiki webpages for recommendations or ask me. You, of course may use your own computer of a webserver, but the installation of pmWiki does require much knowledge to load the software. (I depend on Paul Lewis to extensively help me with these set-up steps. My Home Page Main Menu (at upper left) has "Wiki Stuff" links to where you may read more about Wiki, how to get it and how to use it.

Siteman Personal Website CMS = Siteman version 1.1.2.

For over a year, I successfully used "Siteman php" because, (after set-up) it is easy to use and has a needed statistical data collection and reporting ability called "site referrers statistical package." However, Siteman does require much knowledge of html to set up the headers, footers, and main menu list. Recent needs however required me to change to pm Wiki. phpWebsite Content Management System Software.

Thanks to you at Appalachian State University so very much for your diligent efforts in putting together a great project. My first ZMM Quality.org website was powered by "php Web Site" for over a year and one half. During this time, it has been wonderful to be able to use this package. The phpWebSite Content Management System (in older versions) had another great feature! This system collected and presented the URL's of all the "Referring Sites" in a giant tabular format. This means it collected data of all the URL's of sites that have directed traffic to your site. It showed a big table listing the URL's where the visitor had just "come from" and how many of such occurrences. These tables were very, very extensive and complete. Hopefully, the newer versions phpWebsite Package will soon restore their wonderful "site referrers" statistical data tables in the upcoming software releases. More information at http://phpwebsite.appstate.edu/ .

How I Use Software Packages To Create My Webpages and Photo Galleries.

Below I Discuss How I Use:

  1. php Gallery
  2. PmWiki
  3. Siteman
  4. phpWebSite for your own website.

Start with a Server: Your Own Computer or a Webhost.

Software packages 1, 2, 3, & 4 being webpage “Presenters,” they must, of course, be installed in a computer operating as an "Internet Server." This could be your own computer (requires advanced knowledge). More likely, you will want to use a (remote) computer belonging to a "php Internet webhosting company." These companies provide these sets of software for you to use remotely, as I have done for these ZMM Quality Photo Gallery pages. First, you sign up with a webhosting company which may be anywhere, but practically speaking, it is slightly preferable to use companies which are close to you. You may ask me what company I use, or choose from a list of recommended webhosting companies. Many such lists must exist, but the only one I know of is at the Gallery Webhosting Referral Page. Once you have signed up your hosting company, then all you will need is a computer with an Internet connection (phone line or DSL) and an internet browser such as Mozilla, MozillaFirebird, Netscape, or MS Explorer. This is the equipment you already have and know how to use, since you're using this very equipment to view these very words!!

Side note about web browser software for your own computer: Mozilla Firebird is especially recommended for lots of reasons, some of which are: 1)It’s wonderfully easy to use. 2) Advanced features. 3) Vastly improved internet security (you know what I mean here!) and 4) Mozilla Firebird is a FREE! download!!! See below for more information and links to their pages for download.

How Hard is it for a Beginner to Use these Software Packages Through an Internet Webhost?

If you know how to use your internet browser and can find your way around my webpages and Photo Gallery albums, you will be ok, because this is what you need (and do use) to upload your pages of text or photos to your webpage! Of course, I assume you already have typed your webpage text into your computer word processor and/or have used your camera software to place your photos into your computer.

Steps to Upload Text to your Webpage:

  • First you launch (i.e. bring "up") your word processor and type into it the text you want to upload.
  • Then you use the "mouse drag" to identify ("hi-lite") the text you want to send to your webpage.
  • Then do an "edit copy."
  • Then you switch to your webpages on your internet browser.
  • ''Logon" so you will have permission to add material to your webpages.
  • Click "edit" on the page you want to modify and use the "edit paste" feature of your computer, to "paste" the text in the correct place on your new web page. (You, of course, must ask for “edit web page”. This is different for each different software.)
  • Click "ok" and the words should be displayed for all "web surfers" to come see them!

Good luck!

Using php Gallery for your Own Web Photo Gallery Website and Uploading your Photos with Gallery Remote.

  • On your computer, use your camera software File Viewer to show you the file names of the photos you want to upload. (Your own computer probably has, as part of its “file management,” a way to view both small “Thumbnails Photo” + “File Name” of each of your photos saved on your computer.
  • Click on your “My Computer Icon” or Hard Drive Icon. As a alternate to your computer’s very simple File Viewer, there is a freeware photo viewer program called Irfanview http://www.irfanview.com/ . This is an even better way to view and find your way around your photos, edit (change) them as needed, and see the file names.)
  • Write down the file names of the photos you want to up-load. Then ask your computer internet browser bring up your Web Photo album. Your webhosting company will give you the internet web address (URL).

Although the php Gallery can guide you thru the photo upload process as you view your Web Photos, it is somewhat involved. The "Gallery Remote" (GR) is simpler and is clearly your best choice for larger batches of photos. (It is a free internet download which you can install on your home computer. See above for how to get it.)

  • When you are ready to upload photos using GR, click on the icon that “launches” GR application in your computer. Soon you will see the Gallery Remote Upload Box on your computer screen.
  • Then ask to "log-on" and then select your Web Album where the photos are to go.
  • Then with your camera software Photo-Viewer "launched," hold down the shift key and click on all the photos you want to upload by Gallery Remote.
  • Then "mouse click & drag" all the selected photos "into" the Gallery Remote Upload Box. All the file names (of the photos to be uploaded) will gradually appear in the Remote Upload Box.
  • Click the "upload" button. All the file names (of the photos to be uploaded) will gradually be removed from the upload box. (If any file names remain, it probably means there has been a minor glitch in the internet and a re-click on the "upload" button.)
  • Then go look at your web Photo Albums! Your photos should be there!! (You may need to click on the “refresh/reload” button on your Browser.)
  • At this point you can start the "mouse-hi-lite-edit copy-edit paste" steps to move your Photo Captions (text) from your word processor to each of your respective Gallery Photographs. (Of course, you must be logged on and click the edit photo button under the respective photo.)

You may have to rely on your webhosting company to get you started with the very first steps and help you over the inevitable rough spots that will pop up from time to time. Good luck!

Caution: I Have Left Out Many Details.

These instructions are here so you may learn the "general idea" how to create your web pages and photo albums using these software systems. Of necessity, I have left out many details. Otherwise, it would take a whole book to completely explain each and every step to a beginner. For these reasons, please do not rely on the above instructions to provide each and every one of the necessary steps.

These software systems are designed to be simple enough so you can figure them out as you go!! Thus, if you pay attention, and think, and rely on your past experience with computers, and remember the basic steps you have used before, you can generally proceed with just a few “bumps,” even if you are a beginner. This is what I did!! For these reasons, you will generally not need to read instructions.

But if you get in a jam there are “Complete Sets of Instructions" on how to use these packages. Paul Lewis says: "Every single one of these packages come with very detailed README files and other documentation. Gallery, PmWiki, and phpWebsite provide whole websites devoted to step by step instructions. However, I would recommend you only go to these if you get "stuck" and can't figure out what to do after first trying to move ahead on your own. Also, "User Discussion Forums" are of some help for the tougher problems, but generally you will be better off learning by "trial and error" and "learning as you go along." This is what I was able to do with mostly no difficulty.

Again, good luck!!

Software We Highly Recommend

Below, as "bonus," is new information for people who are worried about computer viruses, worms etc. Please study and pass on the good information about what the Mozilla Organization and Mr. Irfan Skiljan (Irfanview) are doing!!!

I hope all three of these continues to develop new and better software tools and much continued success and public acclaim!!!!

Similar to their efforts to make publicly available free software is the software of Mozilla Email & Mozilla Browser. Have you ever tried either? They are VERY good!!!!!!

Much success in all your endeavors,

Henry Gurr

Irfanview v3.97 --FREE-- Photo Viewer and Photo Editor Computer Program. One of the BEST!

I have been using for the last year a most wonderful & --FREE--
"Digital Photo Browser-Editor" system called Irfanview v3.97. As is the case
for the two Mozilla Applications (below), Irfanview has been developed with
the volunteered efforts of very dedicated & expert computer enthusiasts. This is another example of the very unusual new development of such cooperative teams that is sweeping the globe. It is called the "Open Source Movement". It is very heart warming to see what is happening here.
1) Firefox Browser is only recently developed and is *Highly Recommended*
by many tech editors.

2) Irfanview Digital Photo Browser-Editor is a reliable & free download.
On the Internet, go to http://www.irfanview.com where you may learn all about it. If you have questions or need help, you can contact me (Henry Gurr) as well.
Actual down loads are also available from http://irfanview.tuwien.ac.at/ OR http://www.irfanview.net/

3) Irfanview Digital Photo Browser-Editor is reliable, easy to use, can be easily adapted to your needs and is fully compatible with your other computer software for both Windows or Macintosh.

4) Irfanview Digital Photo Browser-Editor has all the features and abilities you are already familiar with and accustomed to in any high quality general-purpose "Photo Handling System". It is one of those great softwares that "can do any thing you want quickly and easily. And it looks just like what you have been using with all the "buttons" controls, etc are in a similar place and meaning the same thing.

5) And, on top of this, Irfanview Digital Photo Browser-Editor has the ability to read almost any digital data format and change any photo digital format to another photo digital format.

6) Despite the fact that Irfanview Digital Photo Browser-Editor is free, it is actually better and more trustworthy than many other highly touted and expensive software products!! Attention! Attention! Attention!

7) Yes, I know this is hard to believe! But pay attention and you will see more
and more people talking about and downloading Irfanview Digital Photo Browser-Editor for use in their computer.

Mozilla Firefox --FREE-- Internet BROWSER Computer Program.

I have been using for the last six months a most wonderful & --FREE--
"Internet Browser" system called Mozilla Firefox Browser. As is the case
for Thunderbird email (below), Mozilla Firefox Browser has been developed with
the volunteered efforts of a very dedicated world wide team of expert
computer enthusiasts. This is another example of a very unusual new
development of such cooperative teams that is sweeping the globe. It is
called the "Open Source Movement". It is very heart warming to see what

Mozilla Thunderbird --FREE-- EMAIL Computer Program.

I have been using for the last three months a second, and equally wonderful *FREE* email system called Mozilla Thunderbird Email. It has been developed with
the volunteered efforts of a very dedicated world wide team of about 40 highly motivated
expert computer enthusiasts, part of the "Open Source Movement".

Your existing address lists may be easily "Imported" into Thunderbird
Email. This address book can be your "main address book" for email and
home addresses, telephone numbers, birthdays, notes, business contacts,
etc, etc . Once you have your address book fully organized, it can be used
to print letter labels, print summaries etc.

5) Thunderbird Email has a VERY EXTENSIVE, VERY MANEUVERABLE, address
book. You can arrange it in the way you want and it also has the biggest number
of name, phone number, email data places I have seen.

6) Thunderbird Email is reliable, easy to use, can be easily adapted to
your needs and is fully compatible with your other computer software
