Three Minutes Later We See That We Must Go Thru a Deep Road Cut In Order to Continue On Down the Mountain Side. “[ …. morning is almost ended.]“(Cont.next) Just West of Georgetown Lake, MT Flint Creek drops precipitously here into a very narrow and deep canyon. The road, needing a lesser rate of drop, winds down the steep sides of the canyon, until it again reaches the riverside, at an elevation ~1000 feet lower. All the way down, the dense trees block any view of the creek. At the bottom of the grade, the road and river, although still in a very narrow and deep canyon, now travel practically level until the canyon opens to a wide flat fertile valley. Note 45 degree slope of the strata on the rocks both sides of the road. This rock is likely part is the same tough resistant geological formation that has prevented the creek here from eroding down to the same level as the valley below. Saying it differently, this strong rock has kept the valley up stream and all its beautiful lakes just the way it is. Note also the wide parking lot at right of highway. This is a good place to stop, rest, and review notes for ZMM Reading/Research. ************************************ (Photo = 109-0980 ...... ZMM Page = 236 ...... WayPt = 245w 6312ft)

Forty Minutes Later, Redwinged Blackbirds Welcome Me To a Storm Filled Lush Green Valley. “ We pass through Phillipsburg …. “(Cont.next) Philipsburg, MT Ever since Pipestone Pass, the road stays within two miles of Flint Creek (now more like a river) all the way to Drummond, MT and I-90. This is approximately 40 miles. There the creek water joins Clarks Fork River, and with I-90 goes West. Both eventually reach the Pacific Ocean by way of Missoula, MT. The water, perhaps by way of the Columbia River, flows long the Oregon/Washington border and gets to Portland, OR. By contrast, Interstate-90, using a variety of river channels and mountain passes, heads more or less directly west to Seattle, WA. The ZMM Route separates from the Clarks Fork River at Missoula, MT, goes generally southwest to cross the Bitterroot Range at Lolo Pass, into Idaho. It travels through Oregon, then Northern California, and soon thereafter also reaching the Pacific Ocean at Crescent City CA. Notice how again the ZMM Route encounters Lewis and Clark Territory. ************************************ (Photo = 109-0981c ...... ZMM Page = 236 ...... WayPt = 247w 5317ft)
