Imagine That This Is the Development With the “Ridiculous Small Lots.“ [Part IV. In opening of Chapter 27 the Narrator is in the middle of a very bad dream. Then Chris calls: ] “"Dad! Wake up!" .. "I’m awake." I can just barely make out his face in the dawn light. We’re in trees somewhere outside. There’s a motorcycle here. I think we’re in Oregon somewhere. .. "I’m all right, it was just a nightmare." .. He continues to cry and I sit quietly with him for a while. "It’s all right," I say, but he doesn’t stop. He’s badly frightened. .. So am I. .. …. It was just a bad dream." I tell him he’s shivering and should get back into the sleeping bag. .. He does this. "It’s so cold," he says. .. "Yes." By the dawn light I can see the vapor from our breaths. Then he crawls under the cover of the sleeping bag and I can see only my own. .. I don’t sleep. .. The dreamer isn’t me at all. .. It’s Phædrus. .. He’s waking up. .. A mind divided against itself. . . . me . . . I’m the evil figure in the shadows. I’m the loathsome one.. . . . .. I always knew he would come back.. . . . .. It’s a matter now of preparing for it.. . . . . The sky under the trees looks so grey and hopeless. .. Poor Chris.“ (End Chapter 27) Somewhere North of, but close to, La Pine, OR. As already stated, I was unable to locate the Narrator’s Central Oregon Campsite. My photos used to represent the Narrator’s and Chris’s campground were taken at the Corral Springs Campground 34 mi South of Lapine. The camping experience and landscape there was quite similar to the Narrator’s descriptions. ******************************* (Photo = 113-1390cz1.4...... ZMM Page = 298 ...... WayPt = 358i6 ~4219. Cold Grey Desolate Chicago. “That, for Chris, is where it started.“ [In the opening of Chapter 28, because of the Narrator’s bad dream (Chapter 27), he is still badly shaken and extreemly frightened. The Narrator, sensing the return of the Ghost of Phaedrus, grows more hopeless. The cold gray dawn of their Oregon camp ground reminds him of Phaedrus’s total failure in the cold, gray, & bleak streets of Chicago. The Narrator reconstructs for us the Chicago story leading up to his final mental breakdown and hospitalization. His thoughts continue captions next. (Cont.Next)] University of Chicago, Chicago, IL. To Show this university’s Church and Medieval Academic Origins, this building has ribbed and vaulted high-gothic arches in the darkened entrance way and three Roof Sheltered Recessed Platforms which are prepared places for Statues of the Saints. These features will be shown, in greater detail, in later photos of this building. ******************************* (Photo = 100-0081 ...... ZMM Page = 299...... WayPt = 358i7 ~4219. Cold, Grey, Sky Shrouds a Freezing Oregon Morning. [The Narrator, thinking of what happened in Chicago, says:]“ .. It won’t happen again. . . . .. I think what I’ll do is head down for San Francisco, and put Chris on a bus for home, and then sell the cycle and check in at a hospital . . . or that last seems so pointless. . . . I don’t know what I’ll do. .. The trip won’t have been entirely wasted. At least he’ll have some good memories of me as he grows up. That takes away some of the anxiety a little. That’s a good thought to hold on to. I’ll hold on to that. .. Meanwhile, just continue on a normal trip and hope something improves. Don’t throw anything away. Never, never throw anything away.“(Cont.Next) Somewhere North of, but close to, La Pine, OR. .******************************* (Photo = 113-1389cz1.5...... ZMM Page = 300 ...... WayPt = 358i8 ~4219. In High Altitude Central Oregon, You May Expect Mid- Summer Frost! “Cold out! Feels like winter! Where are we, that it should get this cold? We must be at a high altitude. I look out of the sleeping bag and this time see frost on the motorcycle. On the chrome of the gas tank it’s sparkling in the early sunlight. On the black frame where the sunlight hits it it’s partly turned to beads of water that will soon run down to the wheel. It’s too cold to lie around.“(Cont.Next) Somewhere North of, but close to, La Pine, OR. Not only the dust, but as you see in my photos, I ALSO experienced FROST when I camped at the "Corral Springs National Forest Campground". This was 2 miles West of OR Rt. 97 about 50 miles South of La Pine. In a desert, the atmosphere is totally free of moisture, making it very transparent to infrared (radiant heat). Thus there is rapid transfer of any heat to outer space. This results in rapid cooling to point of freezing! In desert regions, prior to refrigerators, this was a common way to make ice! You have to see it to believe it! ******************************* (Photo = 114-1401c...... ZMM Page = 300 ...... WayPt = 358i9 ~4219. Photo at 372 4912ft)

Plants Struggle for Survival in the Dry Powdery Volcanic Dust. Exposed to the Intense Sunlight, Hill Tops & Slopes Are Deadly to Plant Life Since the Rare Rain Water Runs Down the Slopes, and the Remaining Moisture Quickly Evaporates. This Leaves only Parched Dust. “At the motorcycle I unpack everything, get out the long underwear and put it on, then clothes, then sweater, then jacket. I’m still cold. .. I step through the spongy dust …. “(Cont.Next) Somewhere North of, but close to, La Pine, OR. In addition to the frost, you can see the spongy dust in the photo. While camping there. I had to push my tent way under those pines. This was the only place where there was a thin mat of pine needles, so I could get away from the sticky dust! I am sure the rugs of my car still have the residuum of this dust from my shoes! ******************************* (Photo = 113-1395cz1.1 top...... ZMM Page = 300 ..... WayPt = 358i11 ~4219. Corresponding To the Narrators Experience, the Frost Starts To Melt in the early morning Sunny Patches. “ ….[The frost is in little patches on the road too], but melting and dark wet tan between the patches where the early sun’s rays strike it. This Scene of Frost, Dry Volcanic Dust, Struggling Plant Life and Old Weathered Stump Is Almost Identical To Author Pirsig’s Own Summer 1968 Photo. You May View This Original ZMM Scene At Link Below. “ Chris is still asleep and we won’t be able to go anywhere until the air warms up. Good time to get the cycle tuned. I work loose the knob on the side cover over the air filter, and underneath the filter withdraw a worn and dirty roll of field tools. My hands are stiff with the cold and the backs of them are wrinkled. Those wrinkles aren’t from the cold though. At forty that’s old age coming on. I lay the roll on the seat and spread it open . . . there they are. . . . like seeing old friends again. .. I hear Chris, glance over the seat and see that he’s stirring but doesn’t get up. He’s evidently just rolling in his sleep. After a while the sun gets warmer and my hands aren’t as stiff as they were. .. I was going to talk about some of the lore of cycle repair, the hundreds of things you learn as you go along, which enrich what you’re doing not only practically but esthetically. But that seems too trivial now, though I shouldn’t say that. .. But now I want to shift into another direction, which completes his story. I never really completed it because I didn’t think it would be necessary. But now I think it would be a good time to do that in what time remains.“(Cont.Next) Somewhere North of, but close to, La Pine, OR. Plants Have a Hard Time Surviving Here. “The metal of these wrenches is so cold it hurts the hands. But it’s a good hurt. It’s real, not imaginary, and it’s here, absolutely, in my hand. …….. .. In his pursuit of a concept of Quality, Phædrus kept seeing again and again little paths all leading toward some point off to one side. He thought he already knew about the general area they led to, ancient Greece, but now he wondered if he had overlooked something there. …..[Here the Narrator relates (in two pages) how his colleague, Bozeman English Professor Sarah Vinke, introduced him to the Classical Greek emphasis on Quality.] …. On the machine now everything is done except the oil change. I wake Chris and we pack and go. He’s still sleepy but the cold air on the road wakes him up.“(Cont.Next) Somewhere North of, but close to, La Pine, OR. Again we notice the Narrator’s dependence on “Good old reality.“ The same is absolutely true for all of us. However, like the air surrounding us, we seldom notice it!! This explains why the Narrator repeatedly reminds us of this fact which is an integral part of his Quality Philosophy. Soon on my Homepage Main Menu, there will be an essay about Professor Sarah Vinke by Sarah’s former student Shirley Luhrsen. ******************************* (Photo = 113-1352cs ...... Dark Volcanic Rock Along Route 97 Seen In Distance. “The piney road goes upward, and there’s not so much traffic this morning. The rocks among the pines are dark and volcanic. I wonder if that was volcanic dust we slept in. Is there such a thing as volcanic dust? “(Cont.Next) Somewhere en route to La Pine, OR. By the highway, there was plenty of dark (nearly black) volcanic rock at Lava Butte Volcanic Cinder Cone. This was at Lava Butte National Monument located 20 miles prior to Lapine, OR. This was not ture after Lava Butte. Although volcanic mountains were evident all around at a distance, I did not notice any dark volcanic rock among the trees along the highway. My notes only record spotting volcanic rock at the edge of sidewalks as seen in photo second next. ******************************* (Photo = 113-1348 ...... ZMM Page = 303 ..... General View, Left to Right: Former ZMM Gas Station, the ZMM Restaurant and Associated Motel. I tell Chris to order me ham and eggs for breakfast while I stay outside to change the oil. “(Cont.Next) South Main Street, La Pine, OR. Because this Restaurant and Gas Station are side by side (and because there are hardly any other restaurants here), I conclude that this must certainly be the ZMM Restaurant in La Pine. Note: Due to my travel itinerary, my photos of La Pine, OR, were taken in the afternoon.and the sun was in the West. Narrator and Chris were in La Pine in the morning, and the sun would have been in the opposite direction - East. This photo taken 11 minutes after the previous, shows the next stage of the development of the “crown”. I have a photographic record of how this system changed (360 degree panoramas) over a total of 25 minutes. ******************************* (Photo = 113-1357 ..... ZMM Page = 303 ...... The ZMM Restaurant In La Pine. The White Building To the Left Is the Former ZMM Gas Station, Which Still Has the Raised Concrete For Where the Gas Pumps Were. “ …. At a filling station next to the restaurant I pick up a quart of oil, and in a gravelly lot back of the restaurant remove the drain plug, let the oil drain, replace the plug, add the new oil, and when I’m done the new oil on the dipstick shines in the sunlight almost as clear and colorless as water. Ahhhhh! .. I repack the wrench, …. “(Cont.Next) South Main Street, La Pine, OR. This photo taken July 3, 2002, one day prior to USA celebration of National Declaration of Independence Day, hence the Flag. In the Clouds, note that the “Crown” is formed at the precise intersection of a “Cross” formed by two lines of clouds. At this time the line of clouds to the South were developing a second “near crown”, NOTE TO GURR: this line was a repeat of the previous captionAt this time, a second “near crown” was developing further South, with several dark concentrating areas. I think these were trying to make more “crowns”? More photos of the “crown” and its subsequent development will be (eventually) in my album called ‘HSG Personal Experiences’. Different topic: Years ago, many people disposed of waste oil as does the Narrator here and other places in ZMM We now understand why this is unacceptable and, in my opinion, should really never have been done - like smoking and alcoholic beverages. ******************************* (Photo = 113-1358 .....
